Coral reefs are entering a new rhythm of heat stress.

Across the Indo-Pacific and Caribbean, coral reefs are once again experiencing widespread bleaching as prolonged marine heatwaves continue to raise ocean temperatures.

When water remains only a few degrees warmer than seasonal averages, corals expel the microscopic algae that provide both their colour and much of their energy. What remains is the pale, bleached reef now being observed across multiple regions.

What we're watching

Scientists are no longer concerned only with stronger bleaching events, but with how frequently they are occurring. Recovery windows are becoming shorter, leaving many reef systems exposed before they have time to regenerate.

Life continues to rewrite the rules.

Thousands of metres below the ocean's surface, where sunlight never reaches, entirely different ecosystems continue to emerge.

Around hydrothermal vents and cold seeps, researchers are documenting remarkably diverse biological communities that rely not on photosynthesis, but on chemical energy released from the seafloor.

Rather than existing at the margins, these environments support complex food webs that challenge long-held assumptions about where life can exist.

This process, known as chemosynthesis, allows microorganisms to convert chemicals such as hydrogen sulphide into energy, forming the foundation of entire ecosystems independent of sunlight.

The ocean is not one place.

It is an interconnected collection of worlds.

Coral reefs. Open oceans. Polar seas. Kelp forests. Deep trenches.

Each functions according to its own rhythms, yet every system influences another.

Because we experience only fragments, our understanding is built from fragments too.

Perhaps the ocean was never meant to be completely understood.

Perhaps it asks only that we continue returning to it; with curiosity, patience and respect.
