Some coral reefs are proving more resilient than we once thought.

While coral bleaching continues to affect reefs around the world, researchers are beginning to identify what they call coral refuges - areas where reefs naturally experience less heat stress and have a greater chance of surviving warming oceans.

Rather than being evenly distributed, these refuges are shaped by local ocean conditions. Cooler water rising from deeper layers, internal waves, and regional climate patterns can temporarily reduce temperatures, giving corals valuable relief during periods of extreme heat.

Recent research suggests these naturally protected reefs may play an important role in the future of coral conservation, acting as reservoirs of biodiversity that could help replenish surrounding reef systems.

OBSERVED

More than 110 previously unknown marine species have been identified in Australia's Coral Sea.

Earlier this year, marine taxonomists working with Australia's national science agency, CSIRO, announced the identification of more than 110 fish and invertebrate species believed to be new to science, with that number expected to grow as further analysis continues.

Collected from depths between 200 and 3,000 metres, the discoveries include deep-water sharks, rays, chimaeras, and numerous invertebrates from habitats that had rarely been explored.

The findings form part of the Ocean Census initiative; a global effort to accelerate the discovery and documentation of marine life before many ecosystems undergo significant environmental change.

Although the ocean covers more than 70% of Earth's surface, scientists estimate that much of it remains unexplored. Every expedition continues to reveal new species, habitats and ecological relationships that reshape our understanding of life beneath the surface.

Entire ecosystems continue to be documented for the first time, while others are changing faster than scientists can fully study them.
